Busy hands

I've been keeping my hands busy to help quiet my mind lately. I've been feeling like I have not been "really" getting anything done, but when I see these all together here, it's much more than I realized. several others I've finished are not even here.

I finally summoned the strength to cut into some of my most beloved {and expensive}, Heather Ross prints. I've been ~~hoarding~~ saving, some for years now. I have no issue using making beautiful, expensive fabrics for Kunklebaby, or my children. The difference is I cut into these for me. I'm going to make a nice, cozy, throw quilt for me, and only me. Maybe a few pillows for my bed too. It's strange to think, I'd never spend as much money on a blanket as this one will cost. The fabric was a gift from my lovely husband... who I'll admit every once in awhile actually listens to me talk about silly things like fabric designers and the current trendy colors, or animals.

I am working on putting January behind me. I hope the memory grows flimsy and transparent with time. The sting will dull, until all that remains is a small & distant picture in my head. Times passes. Does it heal all wounds? I think, no. It does allow them to fade and diminish in loudness & duration. They remain though, sitting below the surface, never quite gone. Able to to be cut deep into, if one knows the right tool. With time, a callous will form, disguising the original wound. Time goes on.

I have welcomed this February as no other in my past. I welcome the change, and hope for the next month ahead. I've been thinking a lot about time lately and what it can bring us as it passes. My children grow. Strong legs, strong minds. I try to distract myself from the impermanence of it all. Someday, I too will be gone, and only a memory in their minds. A memory of faded snapshots, and soft spoken words. The future is theirs, I am just their bridge leading them to it. The days pass quickly, as they stretch higher to the sky. Each day growing in size and skills.

I think I am going to explore some of my thoughts on time in general, this February. The longest, short month of the year. The start of the year has been a bit rough for us, but I have hope for the the rest of the year. It's darkest before dawn, and we are waiting for the sun, now.

With all the knitting I've been doing, it's been nice to finish up a few projects this week {I'll share when I have pic's}. Afterward, I decided to whip up a quick & easy, little project. It's cold here, yes- winter, frigid cold and this little guy just refuses to wear a hat for more than 2 minutes. From the back door, 12 steps to the cold car and off it goes into a multicolored pile of mama knit hats on the van floor. A full weeks worth the last I checked. I've tried everything & every hat, with him. He smiles at me in his devilish little way as I explain, "Please, PLEASE leave your hat on today, Baby J. You know Mama doesn't like it when you throw them on the dirty floor in the car. ok, then". Two minutes later and they join the growing pile of sad, discarded knits.

I decided to give a hat with ties a try for him. I'll tie it on and then he will just forget all about it. {Insert evil Mom laughter here} Famous last words. {sigh} It lasted one single, five minute, car trip where he yelled, "Mama....help ME", the whole time. Once in the house, he decided no hat would get the best of him, and promptly figured out how to get it off immediately.

Well, in the end, it did turn out cute. Older brother has taken a liking to it. If only I had knit it a bit larger it would actually fit him. He enjoying the tiny hat/big head look this week, I guess.

Snow!

We have snow here, finally!! May be the first time this winter he's worn a coat, and not whined about it. I swear this one never gets cold outside. He'd wear a t-shirt, shorts & snow boots to drop off the kids at school each day if I let him-- EVERY day and I wouldn't ever hear a peep about him being cold. When I say put on a jacket, it's winter & cold, he always chuckles then says, " ohhhhh Mom, you know I NEVER get cold. Remember?". I sure love this one's zest for life!

Everything is gonna be ok

The other day, I sat watching the rain puddle & drip on my windshield. It was one of those gross, gray kinda days. Days where your first thought upon waking is to snuggle tighter in your blanket, roll over and wake up again tomorrow. Hibernate until the sun shines in. A day that can zap some energy and happiness out of the most optimistic of us.

Unfortunately, snuggles and sleep wasn't on the agenda for this Mama. I had four little one's scampering through the house already. The two oldest {supposedly} getting ready for school. Hello muddy boots, raincoats and wet hair, good-bye warm, comfy bed.

Parked at a red light after dropping of the schoolings, waves of conflict and issues banged around in my head. A jumble of problems- therapy, finances, family... life. The rain dripped and danced a swerving, lazy line across the windshield in a calm melodious rhythm. In between the jumbled mix of anxiety, the thoughts, I'd have to thank a friend for fixing those wipers... Do we need milk? Anyone feed the cats? My two little boys giggled in the backseat. Oblivious to to any knowledge of my inner thoughts and conflict. A few moments of silence and then all the sudden, one clear, loud refreshing thought

Everything. is. going. to be. ok.

The feeling suddenly overtook me. It invigorated me with energy & strength. This world can not get me down. I will not allow it. I'm a fighter- strong & proud. I have so very much to be thankful for, and appreciate! I smiled, and the while the sunshine was only in my eyes, it had a lasting effect. We are just fine. Things will be fine. We have everything we need-happy, healthy, well loved family.

Sometimes I just need quiet. Quiet mind, quiet soul. Moments that pass without thoughts or worries, in a smooth meditative state. In these times, these small moments of need, I usually find my knitting needles to be very busy- the perfect remedy.

Sometimes a steady, one-two, one-two, repeats in my mind. Focusing on the melodic, repetitive movements of my fingers. Sometimes.... just silence. A sweet, peaceful, hard to come by, silence. These days I'm enjoying the calm, seeking a silenced mind. Worries pushed aside, even if just for a few minutes, or even seconds. Peace, escape... serene. This week, I've seen a lot of my needles. Little bits of stolen silence, one string working it's way into bigger and better things, one small stitch at a time.

We ushered in the New Year with chocolate cupcakes & sparkling apple cider, with the two older kids. Little boys will have their moments to stay up late with us, but it's not their time yet. This year marks the first year that any of the kids were awake at midnight. These two have tried for two years, but haven't even made it to 11, previously . Instead, fast asleep with their blankets on the living room floor. I imagine their dreams filled with happy thoughts of Christmas and the anticipation of the coming year.

This year we started baking around 10:30 so the cupcakes would be just warm enough at midnight. Add a few glasses of sparkling cider and they were all smiles! I think late night cupcake baking might be a new tradition on New Years Eve for us.

I have high hopes for 2012. I am entering this year much more optimistically than I did in 2011. The winter of 2011 wasn't kind to us, and I hope this one brings lots of health & happiness to my family. I hope 2012 brings great things for my family, and all of yours. Happy New Year!

Being the only girl, among a sea of brothers, does have it's perks sometimes. Like, when Mama is sewing and would just LOVE to make another dress! I am so lucky my daughter is a girlie-girl and loves dresses. With three boys, she is my only chance at getting to dew really cute, sweet girl things. I'd love her just the same if she was a tom-boy, but I adore her love of dresses & frill.

I love my boys just as much, but there are only so many pants & t-shirts you can make before needing a dress fix. This little girl is as sweet as the candy on her dress. She's the resident peacekeeper, always getting along with everyone... and with a smile and giggle too. She loves dresses, especially one's made by Mama. I just love her so much! She'll be rocking this little number straight through to the New Year. {wow 2011 went by quickly!} Shhh, she has an equally cute one waiting patiently under the Christmas tree for her.

Cookie Day

We had a great weekend! I finished my Christmas shopping, I'm almost done with list of things to make, and I got to hang out with my little sister & niece. We fit a lot into one weekend, shopping, visits with cousins, zoo lights, cookie day and lots & lots of making of gifts. According to one excited, eight year old, we made 86 sugar cookies yesterday. He lost count of the toffee cookies and chocolate covered pretzels. I know his heart lies with those sugar cookies.

It's always this way, at this time of year. No matter how early I start planning ahead, we always have that final busy rush of activities. This year I'm just taking it one day at a time, enjoying the many things we are getting to do, and taking note of all the great, little things. The kids are beyond thrilled with the excitement of Santa's arrival, our first "snowfall" {a sprinkling of dust}, and making & wrapping of gifts. Doors have been shut in my face so many times this week, with a little voices coming from behind declaring, STAY OUT! We are wrapping your presents!

Lots to do & lots to enjoy. I'm off to munch on some yummy chocolate covered pretzels now. Mmmmmm.

Visits with Santa

Made Monday

Today I can share a Christmas gift that's been gifted over the weekend. December is really hard for blogging. I'm making TONS of stuff, but can't show any of it, so I don't ruin the surprise. I made this little bear for an ever so sweet little boy.

I think he turned out pretty cool with jointed limbs that move & can be posed. He's obviously more of a display bear/ gentle play for that reason, but the moving button jointed, arms & legs are just too fun. I'm hoping to get another one made up for my daughter before Christmas in white fur fabric. It has a fair amount of hand sewing, but I think I might just have time.. maybe. I also need to make an entire quilt for the oldest, before Christmas. I have not one stitch completed on that, so we shall see. I do think it's really cute that he asked for two things this year: a weaving loom and a handmade quilt from Mama. That's my boy!

If you want to make your own little bear, he's made using the, Bjorn Bjornson pattern in Wee Wonderfuls, 24 dolls to sew & love. I've made a few of the dolls in the book and he's my favorite so far. He was easier than I thought he's be also. bonus!

Holiday Knits

This is what I have been doing with my ~~free~~ time. I have lots of lots of knits to gift this holiday season. Many more still on my to-make list, along with lots & lots of sewing, but I'm making progress. I'm really proud of what I have been able to finish so far! It's more than I imagined completing when I made my original Christmas list. For all you family & friends lurking, I tried to photograph them so they are not very clearly shown... and you never know what may or may not be for you.

I've also been working on fabric gift bags. I think that saying we will use "no" wrapping paper this year is unrealistic, but I was thinking if I make some of these bags for the next several years, probably in two years or so, we can be using all re-usable fabric wrap. Well, as long as I don't give them all away each year. haha! I know I've set this goal in the past. Maybe this is the year it works.

Hats for Homeless

Sickness is running wild through our house. Yucky, energy draining, fever and cranky kids sickness. It was a LONG weekend, and yes, I do realize it's Tuesday. {sigh} One ER visit and four little sick kids later, I didn't even start most of what I wanted to complete over the weekend. I'm feeling a little discourages and now sick myself. {oh, double sigh}

The one thing I did finish were these hats. I decided about a month ago this year I would make hats for one of the local homeless shelter. These are all children's hats. Right now they have several families with kids living there. Last year we donated some gently used, children's clothing, but this year I wanted to do something a little more special. Something that was made "just for them". Six was the number I decided on after a little thinking about what I "realistically" had time to do it in. I also wanted to make it a little more special for my children. Something they would remember. They watched mama work hard to finish these, always telling them they were for children with no homes. It opened up so much to talk about with them while my needles clicked away.

Six was chosen because there are six members of our family. The kids were suddenly awaken to the idea that kids, in this country, in this state, so very close to home... have no homes. I feel an overwhelming pain thinking about the parents. I'm sure not one of them ever thought,looking down at their sweet newborns, someday my baby will be without a home. In no way do I think the hats are somehow magically altering their lives, it's just a little thing that I could do. I just hope it helps to keep them warm in our frigid Ohio winter. Remind them that people out there still care! Each hat has a tag that says, "handmade, special JUST for you!".

The charity's are always saying how much hats, gloves & coats are needed. If anyone is looking to help out, please consider donating to your local homeless shelters. The items don't need to be expensive, handmade or even new. Every day we have a chance to help others, this is just my little way right now.

I'm exciting to be sending these off to their new owners tomorrow!

Just me

Today I was thinking about me. Well, me as a thirteen year old. Truth is, it seems like just yesterday. I was suddenly struck with the recollection of just how much things mattered to me. Just silly, little things compared to now, but to thirteen, fourteen year old Jessica, they were earth shattering important. I chuckled to myself and then a second idea dawned on me. My eight year old is FAR closer to thirteen than I am these days. OMG, I will in a few short years have a thirteen year old of my very own. A few year after that a whole household of teens. How did I get so far from my teenage self with just a blink of an eye?

Truth is things are not always happy & rosy for us. That's reality of life. I've butted heads far to often with a too close to thirteen year old boy of mine. I will say that every time I think I have this mothering thing down, something new comes up. I laugh now at my naivety of two child, Mama Jess. Oh how easy and simple all my solutions were. As a mama to four now, I see just how complicated things with a tribe of children, can get sometimes. This new pre-teen stage has me reassessing everything I thought I knew again, as does the realization the unknown part, never ends. Honestly what is motherhood other than reassessing, and learning as we go. Trying to hold our heads up when we are down and sharing our glow when we are up.

The thing is, I want my kids to know thirteen year old Jess. I want them to realize I wasn't always the woman nagging them to be nice to their brother, or clean up their dirty socks. I want them to know my passions and experiences. I want them to know that I was once a thirteen year old girl, who thought her parents were silly and life had to be better, easier, more exciting... somewhere out there- over the rainbow. I want to connect. I've decided to make a new effort to try and relate and remember what it feels like to be a kid. Not just a tired, sometimes overworked mama with a mile long to do list. It's still there inside of me.

One of the first things to let go of was my "adult" aversion to being photographed lately. {Let's just say 4 kids in 6-ish odd years is not the easiest on the figure} The other day I realized the kids don't see the extra baby weight I see right now. They see their mama who they love. I want them to have pictures to look back on with their mom. So they can chuckle and laugh and pick apart the my hair, and clothing style in 20 years. So, I've been letting the kids take pictures of me-whatever they want, silly, serious, fancy, often out of focus, and depending on the photographer, lacking me in the photo at all. Sometimes I make silly faces, {oh how luc loves those}, sometimes I smile, but always it's me there. Real, genuine Mama!

Little bits of Christmas Past

Christmas has officially landed here. I have to say, not a minute too soon for me! I LOVE Christmas. I find it has a magical feeling about it. I feel energized, optimistic, and overall so lucky for the amazing people in my life. It's also a time I am reminded of those I have lost in this life. Holding little trinkets that they once held in their hands, this time every year. Putting special ornaments on the tree that I remember playing with when I was my children's age.

The magic is there, even for this silly 30 years old "adult". I get to experience the beauty & joy through my kids eye's all over again. My most prized decorations are those once owned by family & friends before me. I hope that they will grace the homes of my son's and daughter someday, along with the handmade items we've added to the mix. Someday, I want them to pick up an ornament and think, remember how Mom always loved this one best, or this silly thing, I remember making this with Mom. Sometimes trinkets are just a way to remind us to remember. Remember the great times, remember the bad. Keep the memories in your heart and hold on to the love that we have.

New Quilt

Just finished this for the baby & couldn't be happier. He's quickly outgrowing the baby blankets I've made him {gasp}. It's so strange to have his little feet... and legs, stick out of blankets that once {wasn't it just yesterday?} seemed enormous for his little body. {although to appease my sister here, I must say he was 9.5lbs at birth, so never "that" tiny.}

It is backed with a nice, soft, blue flannel and cotton batting = super warm, but not super heavy. I started & finished it in a few hours the other night. It's actually just a really cool fabric, ABC print {by designer, Jenn Ski} that I quilted. No sewing blocks at all. I'm really happy with the binding, and think the colors show showcase the print, perfectly. I subtly embroidered his name so that he will always know it is, 100% for him and only him. You need to remind fourth children of this sometimes, as they get lots of things that once belonged to the siblings.

This is one Christmas present ready to be wrapped up and put under the tree!

Making

Life is what you make it. So why not make it beautiful, lovely, make it grand. Make it happy. Just make it, for you! I spent years angry at the world. Just kinda fluttering by where the wind blew me. I was miserable... and lonely. One day, I woke up and decided "I" was going to lead my life. I was going to stop being angry, blaming people, and feeling sad. I was in charge of my destiny. I would create the life I wanted. I can say with perfect honesty, I've never looked back! My life is so full of love & happiness now. That said, I still have bad days {sometimes years}, I waver a bit and think I have no control. The truth is there are things in life that no one has control over. Sometimes, things just happen-good or bad, it is, as it is.

Life is what you make it. A dandelion "weed", becomes a treasure for mama, in a child's eye's. A piece of paper, an endless opportunity at creativity. Or, you could look at it as a weed, or a simple sheet of white paper, nothing more, nothing less. Some tough moments in our life have taught me compassion, and gratitude. With the thanksgiving holiday, just passed, I've reassessed all the wonderful things I have to be thankful for. I am living the life I always wanted, a houseful of children, with lots & lots of love to go around. A career, making. I am a maker-whether I am sewing, painting or knitting, or growing babies, I am always making. Life works in spells, right now I am making less, and spending more time with family. Some days I wish I had just a little more time. One day when I have hours a day to just sit and make, I'll most likely be missing the rhythm of our days now. With all it's noise, messy meals, and tiny hands to kiss & hold. I am so very thankful right now.

Life is what you make of it. Just go where the day takes you.

more knitting

I've been knitting up a storm these past few months, for Christmas. I'm saving my sewing projects for last since they can be done a little quicker than the knits. Although I have a long list of sewing too-quilts, dresses, dolls, coasters... In the meantime, lots & lots of wash clothes have been coming off my needles. I think they make a nice, useful gift when paired with some fabulous handmade soap. {My absolute favorite is from Honeyrun Farms, local to Columbus. try the honey too it's amazing!}.

Hand knit washcloths take something simple& often, not even thought about, and makes it a little special. I have a special bowl that I like to eat out of. It's nothing fancy, just pretty with a petal shaped rim {actually picked up at the thrift store for less than $1}. Food just seems to taste better when eaten in it. It takes something that is often rushed through & makes it {just a little} more special. My pile to be gifted is growing, and growing.

Tree Lighting

All bundled up warm, we went to the local Christmas Tree lighting, over the weekend. It's one of my favorite winter activities! All the favorites were present, Santa, a huge Christmas tree, fireworks {the kids are watching them above}, nutcrackers, gingerbread men, marching bands. This year, they added giant, helium parade balloons too. A great time was had by all! We finished the night up with bagels at Panera and headed for home. A few of the kids drifting off to sleep before we arrived... maybe sugarplums danced in their dreams?

Made Monday: Slipper Socks

Finished up these fun socks over the weekend. They are done in worsted weight yarn, so a little more like slippers than socks. They are a Christmas gift, for someone special. The pattern is an easy, simple one & a quick knit too. I think I may be knitting a few more of these before the holiday's.... maybe even a pair for myself if I find a little extra time.

New Curtains

I finally finished our new bedroom curtains. While these are not the "greatest" pics, but it's one of the projects I've been working in that isn't a Christmas gift. Yay-something I can show you. They are made from a really thick, warm fabric-perfect for our giant, super old, drafty window this winter. I got the fabric on clearance with an extra 50% off coupon, so they were a great price too!

As an after throught, I almost cleaned my dresser off, but ehhh, that's how it looks so "normally", that's how it stayed. I have 4 kids & a house to clean and a business to run, what can I say?

sick day

We had a sick day here today. Three of the four kids home with coughs & colds. It's kind of a miracle that they all got sick at once. This NEVER happens. Normally it takes weeks for a simple cold to get through our ranks. Each one getting it just a few days after the last, with mama super sick as the grand finale. Typically, by then, the kids have long forgotten how yuckyy they felt, and mama gets no sympathy. Just laments on how boring it is without me to ~~entertain~~, play with them. Ahh, motherhood. Not always a pat on the back.

So far, it's just a little cold. Nothing that lots of extra kisses, snuggles, some warm chamomile tea & honey, can't cure in a few days. So, my day looked a little like this:

Weekending

We had a really nice, calm, productive weekend here. The yard is finally ready for winter. Leaves are raked, plants tended too, little feet got lots of exercise, running & climbing. Mama caught up on some much needed rest with lots of knitting & relaxing--and fit in a photo-shoot. I've been knitting away, but most of the finished products can't be shown until after Christmas, as they are mostly gifts. I am working on a set of children's hats for a local homeless shelter. I'll share those when they are complete-two more to go.

Lots of new stuff will be added to the shop this week. Next Saturday [12-4pm] I will be at Sprout Soup Crafty Mama's Sale, with all my fun Kunklebaby merchandise. There will be a silent raffle too. Come by and enter, you could win an Organic Kunklebaby bib.

So today didn't go exactly as I had planned in my head. {if rarely ever does} I managed to {possibly} break my serger this afternoon, find out one of my sewing machines isn't "exactly" working and the new fabric I purchased to make curtains is ridiculously difficult to work with. {insert reason for broken serger here}

All that aside, we had a great day! Some knitting was done, those silly curtains,finally did get finished and we had a wonderful day celebrating our daughter. Lots of hugs, smiles & laughter. I'd say it was a pretty good day after all. Nothing better than being a mama!

Fall Harvest

We were celebrating these wonderful kids of mine over the weekend, with a fall harvest birthday party. What could be better for November? We had hot soups, warm homemade breads, yummy veggies and lots of goodies-apple pie, and my favorite banana cinnamon cake. The best part for me was, a [then] six & seven year old decided on the theme. Classic, fun & so something this mama wanted to plan. It was a nice, little gathering of close family & friends. The kids had a great day and so did their mama.

This year was so different than last. Over the weekend, I realized just how thankful I am for so many things. Last year was the sickest, most difficult year in the history of our family. Right around this time we had already had numerous ER, doctor and urgent care visits, with more sick days than I can even say. I was a tired, drained mama, just trying to pull everything together and keep up some happy spirits among us. While we haven't hit winter yet {prime sick time}, I am so grateful for the past few months of relative health & happiness we've enjoyed. Autumn has been so wonderful this year! I just started adding the new lovey/security blanket line from Kunklebaby to the shop. There is one in almost every color to start with. My days are now filled with little treasures. A special drawing, a tight hug out of the blue, little squeezes while miniture fingers grasp my hand. Tiny collections, found by tiny collectors, stashed in corners and pockets. A tattered leaf lost & forgotten after being scooped up earlier in the day, being named the prettiest leaf -ever. Little smiles that flutter across faces like butterflies. Tiny pieces of a big picture. The picture of, us.

Some days, are hard. Like, really, really hard. With a gang of children in the house, things get loud, laundry piles up, toys pile up, and arguments, ehh... erupt {sometimes often}. There is always a dish to wash {usually 20+} or clothes to fold. There is never a moment where we think: there, now everything is done. There is always something to do. Sometimes I let that "something" take on too much power and it starts to overwhelm me. I get cranky, I cry, I pout, I go on marathon hat knitting sessions to block it out. I think today isn't goings so well, maybe I should go back to bed & try again tomorrow. While the idea is nice, the reality is, that's never an option. It's life- that's what it all comes down too. It isn't always pretty.

It's in those kinda days, I really have to think about the good times! The times when no one is thinking about homework, speech therapy, laundry, the muddy dog that's waiting to be bathed. The moments where you catch a genuine smile dance across a childs face, hear them giggling together in play, teaching each other, or find a book they have been writing and illustrating that makes you smile. These are the moments that really matter! There are far more good times than bad. There is far more happiness than bickering. There is alotta love in our family. Sometimes I just need to remind myself. A quick reminder that tomorrow will come. Nothing lasts forever, good or bad. Take a deep breathe & smile!

I finally finished my daughters blanket. Hooray! I've been working on it for the last year. Honestly, it probably sat in the closet for 3-4 months of that time, while I worked on other things, but it's been a work in progress for quite sometime. This will be for her birthday gift and it's complete just in time. I'm going to love seeing it around the house. It's a gift I'm glad is staying here, for me to enjoy for awhile too. A lot of love & stitches went into it!

My hope is someday, she might use it with her own child. I'm probably just being overly sentimental, and the blanket will be long gone by then... but, I like to think of her snuggling a baby inside of it's wool. In the meantime since she's {ahem} six and all, and we have many, many years until that would ever happen, I hope she loves it, and snuggles herself tight in it's softness. She sometimes gets scared at night, I always tell her snuggling with a blanket I made her, is like having me there, hugging her through the whole night. She likes that. {I do too}

Pumpkin Patch 2012

My favorite time of the year is here! One of my favorite things to do in the Fall, is go to the Pumpkin Patch. We have been going to the same, pick your own pumpkin patch, since the older kids were just little, tiny babies. I think it's worth the drive for the tradition of it alone. The kids love it, I love it!

The past 2 years we've had friends join us. This year- I'm not gonna lie, it was a wee bit stressful for me. Seven kids will do that I guess. Six of which are running in opposing directions at once. Mostly it was Little {L} , TRYING to get lost in the corn field that bordered the pumpkin patch that had me a bit worried. You'd think with two husbands along with us, that we were doubling the adults, so children could be more easily watches. Lesson learned, ehhh, yeah, no. It totally doesn't work that way. One husband is somewhat helpful, two makes them useless because they talk to each other the whole time, oblivious of those six children dispersing in all directions around them. All in all once all the kids finally got reeled in, pumkins were picked with care, and we had a great time.

Some yummy apple cider, a little dancing, some hilarious {obscenely shaped} swan gourds, seven happy children, and 12 pumpkins later, made for a great afternoon

Eight years! Eight years, since he joined our family & made me a mother. Eight years, since I first held his little hand and kissed each of those fingers. Eight years, since I realized my life would never be the same again, and it was the greatest feeling I'd ever had!

I love his determination. The way he always has to do things just a little {sometimes a lot} different than everyone else. I love his passion. I love his quest for knowledge. I love... him!

Fifteen Years

This weeks marks fifteen years together with my husband, and seven married. That's A LONG time! I met him when I was 15, so I have known him an equal time, as not known him. Next year, I'll have spent more of my life with him than without. {15 years with, 15 years without. crazy}

So much has changed for us in those fifteen years. When we met, we were just kids-high school sweethearts, naive and ready to take on the world together! I kinda feel like I grew up with Mike. All the important things I've gone through have been with him.We met in high school, spent our college years together, started having babies, bought a house, and now we spend our time making our house a home.

There have been lots of ups & downs. Like, when we spent 2 months eating toast in college. Or,when I was raising two little one's at home, and he worked 80+ hour weeks. Only home long enough to catch a little sleep & kiss us before heading back to work. We were broke college kids together, without a car and living in crappy campus apartments with hand me down everything, and we thought we were living the life!. I look back of those days with such a sense of love & respect. We didn't have much, but we've always had each other, and that's what matters.

There have been so many great moments for us too. The day I graduated and thought, this is it. Our life together can start now. I'll never forget becoming a mother, our very first baby & looking over at his proud, smiling face. The moment he became not just a boy, but a father. A father to OUR child. The day we purchased our home together, all giggly, excited and scared--feeling like we were officially grown ups now {which is really quite silly because we already had one child, and another one cooking}.

Most of all I enjoy the things that happen every year- Christmas morning, pumpkin picking at the patch, watching him rock my babies to sleep, the way he always tries to get out of helping plant the garden, then digs every single hole because I do it the "foolish" way. I love him quirks & all!

I can't wait to see what the next fifteen years brings for us!

Getting close to Craftin Outlaws. It's this Saturday! I know--I'm excited just saying it!I feel like a happy, little elf getting ready for Christmas. Busy, busy! The past few days I've been finishing up some cool, new blankets- for the ladies & gents. The patchwork top pictured above may be my very favorite of all time. In person, the fabrics just sing together. I keep trying to find reasons to keep it. {alas, I have none so far}

Other than sewing like a madwomen, I've made a few gifts for friends & family too. We've spent lots of time baking with our many, many, many apples from the orchard. We've made apple cobblers, apple pies, apple sorbet, warm apple mash. I just need to finish up the applesauce & we are all done with that batch. Feels very much like fall here with the scent of fresh apples always baking in our home.

Better get back to sewing, so much to do, so little time. The countdown is on. {And anyone who knows me in person, knows I'm a huge procrastinating, pulling everything together just in time is my specialty.}

Ps... The second picture up there. Yes that one. Any of you get early bird pass for the show? If you did, check your bags. I sewed up a batch of mini-ornaments/ gift card holders just for you. Happy Birthday to my very best friend. She's such an amazing person-kind, gentle, smart, thoughtful, fun, talented, a great mama, and "just" weird enough at times, that she always has me laughing. She's the only person in the world who can embarrass my husband {I LOVE it}.

She's the kind of friend everyone wants. The kind who brings you soup and knitting patterns {with the appropriate sized needles}, when ALL your kids are sick for what seems like weeks on end. She's the friend who sits for hours with you at a slow craft show, just so you don't have to be bored alone all day. The friend who loves your children like her own. She loves them equally, treating the negative just the same as the positive. She's the friend I can find often hugging or kissing my children. The friend who loves you in college, even when you act like a jerk {1/2 the time}. She's the friend that see's goodness in everyone.

She is the friend who you could call in the middle of the night to babysit if necessary, with her asking only, your house or mine? The friend who "doesn't" think it's "weird" that you have four kids, and wishes you to have a few more... and bring them to her house to play! A friend I can cry with. A friend who I laugh with everyday. A friend I can rely on. A friend I trust and love. Thank you for being such a wonderful person. We love you Mary! Happy Birthday. Apple Picking

We were able to squeeze in a trip to an apple farm, in between colds, cranky kids & rain here. I'm so so happy we did! It will officially be added to of list of family traditions in October. The kids had a great time, we came home with more yummy apples that I know what to do with {118!} , and we spent family time together. The day was filled with lots of giggles, smiles, and well.. apples galore. I can't believe it's taken me thirty years to go pick apples. Seriously? What did our parents do with us as kids?

On the menu this week: apple pie, apple mash, apple cobbler, some applesauce to store for the upcoming winter, and apple ice cream. {with the recipe from the Jeni's splendid ice cream book. I'll share more on that later this week}

I'm so glad to welcome October! It's one of my favorite months filled with trips to the pumpkin patch, birthdays, craft shows, crispy air and the autumn leaves blanketing everything. I'm totally a fall girl & the apple picking trip has me all excited for the following month!

To Market, to Market

Farmers's Market season is coming to a close. I'm so ridiculously sad this year! We were able to do 80% of our shopping there over the past few months. Add a few gallons of milk weekly and we were set. We could stock up on flour and pasta in one trip and have to go to the "actual" store shopping only every 2-3 weeks. I'd send my husband to pick up milk, bananas & diapers and we were set. Let me tell you, it's been AMAZING! We've also been able to spend less than we typically do at the store for a higher quality, fresher foods.

With a house full of vegetarians, we go through a ton of fresh fruit & vegetables each week. I love that my kids have met the farmers that raise the chickens that lay the eggs they eat for breakfast. They can ask the farmers a questions about their food, directly and get an immediate response. I love letting them pick out new foods at the market and being able to ask right then, "Ummm... How do I make.. uhh this thing? What is this?". I love organic food, especially at at non-organic prices.

It's been a great season and we've made it to the big market every Saturday [except one. I sure was sorry that week!]. We also found another market to attend on Thursday night that gives us a few extra days of food before the weekend. -plus the best corn I've ever tasted is sold there.

I'm looking forward to the next few weeks where we will stock up on apples for apple mash, applesauce, apple pie and just tasty, fresh raw apples. Yummmmmm!

Making play doh

With two little sick boys this week and LOTS & LOTS of rain, we were pretty much stuck in the house. Needing something fun to do to ease the time, we made play doh the other day. Now, this is the first time I've done this with Lucian. I thought he'd be super excited when I mentioned it. Maybe giggling & acting all silly excited. Instead... he said, "Uhhh, Mama? .... We have play doh from the store.... right in the other room. Did YOU want to play with that? I get it". A little defeated, I just chuckled and said nevermind. Five minutes later, I had a little boy begging to make "special- fun" play dough with me.

I don't remember where I got this recipe {if you have a source please let me know}. It's super easy and quick! The best part is the kids can actually do everything but add the hot water. The simple act of actually using his very own hands to make this, has been enough to entertain him for about an hour a day. Unheard of for him! It is special playdoh. So grab your favorite kid & get cooking.

Homemade Play Doh:

2 cups water {Boiling hot}

2 cups of plain flour

1 cup salt

2 tablespoons oil

4 tablespoons of cream of tartar
food coloring
Add all ingredients in a bowl. Last step is add hot water. Stir. Allow to dry and get playing.

Fall Equinox

Autumn has arrived! My favorite season with all it's wonderful smells of apple pies, spices and crisp, brisk air. The beautifully changing, crunchy fall leaves. I can't wait until our Japanese Maple turns red-it's officially fall in our yard then. I made this quick little table runner for the season. One side is a colorful mix of Autumn leaves for September & November. For the month of October it can be flipped over to the Halloween side. {Ohh, how I also love Halloween too!}

It's finished with a pretty, orange, hand sewn binding to add just the right amount of color to either side. I'm happy with how it turned out. It adds a nice touch of textiles to the table. We have fewer fresh flowers on the table as the cold weather joins us {boo}. I'm hoping this touch of color & texture will brighten my mood just like the flowers do in Spring & Summer.

Something shifted for me today. Something changed as I stared into the face of my baby. My baby was suddenly, not such a baby anymore. When had this happened? I didn't receive the, "time to grow up" memo! Yet, there he sits, across the table from me, on a chair he climbed into all alone. Munching a big, juicy, green apple that one of the big kids left lying around, forgotten & discarded. He found the forgotten prize, squealing in delight with a big chomp.

I sat looking. Looking at my child, so un-baby like in his mannerism. I then realized I would never have let the other kids eat a raw apple at this age! I would have snatched it right from their hands, explaining they would choke on such things. So very much has changed. By my fourth child, I've relaxed and calmed down. I've learned the little things, the things you love the most are the things that pass the fastest {late night snuggles, holding hands, soft, sleeping baby cheek on your chest}.

No longer are important milestones, quickly written down in precise detail on the calender, but instead enjoyed in the moment. I've since let go of the crippling fear that everything in existence "could" hurt my child. Oh the paranoia with number one {sorry kid!}. Without the constant assessing and measuring, my baby grew up before my eyes. Instead of realizing every inch and growth, this time I watched... just watched. Enjoying the time and cherishing the moments, not the stats. Enjoying the being, not the details that he was made up of. Watching. Loving. Hoping to remember forever.

Without realizing, it was, in one glance today, that all those missing stats added up in front of me. My baby. My boy. My son. I am so very, madly in love with this little guy. He's amazing and funny. The curls, oh god, the curls! Cuddly and sweet, but mischievous in the grandest ways and enjoys life with such wholeness.

He sure is something, this one!

Craftin Outlaws is only a few weeks away! This will be my 5th year with the show! {Crazy, right?} It seems like just yesterday I started my little business. Five years ago, this was the very first show I ever vended. I was super sick, early pregnant with Lucian, but hadn't told anyone yet. I had no idea what to expect and felt like everyone else knew exactly what they were doing [except me]. Well, the day was amazing, I was totally hooked on getting to talk to my customers in person and the show. I've applied every year since with my fingers crossed tightly until I get my acceptance letter.

This will be my first year working the show that I'm not pregnant or nursing. YAY- I'm not going to be feeling sick or worrying when my baby will be joining me to eat. {while I love both pregnancy & nursing, it adds a small level of stress for me at shows}

I've been working hard on lots of new items for the show. I have some great new, colorful fabric prints and have expanded my organic line. Look for new items to make their debut: pillows, and coffee sleeves, in addition to all of my regular line up of bibs, blankets, boo-boo packs and accessories.

We spent a little time Sunday, re-shooting a few Kunklebbay items and photographing lots of new stuff for the first time. I'm really happy with how they came out and we had a lot of fun.... Well, I thought it was a lot of fun. My husband thought it to be a bit chaotic and said "let's just go", several times. The thing is with 4 kids, a park, boxes of merchandise and shoot props, it's bound to be chaotic, it's finding the little bits in between that can be used. I am so happy with those little bits.

The chaotic bits: a three year old who was determined he was at the park only to climb tree's, and only those on the other side of the field, a large dog who wanted to join the kids pictures, a cranky baby who wanted to know what in the world we were doing in the park.. with his rocking chair & pillow. A grumpy seven year old [who think's he's 15] who just wanted to either be in every picture, or alone, in the woods.

All in all I took 432 pictures. We got to run in the park for an hour. We missed the rain [as soon as I started our van, sprinkles started dancing across the windshield. {sigh, really?} Undeterred, I drove to the park anyways with hope. Finally, I was happy to realize there would be no more rain.

Made Monday: Quilt

Finally finished up the quilt I've been working on. It was a gift for the new baby that joined our friends last week. I was hoping to get it done before his birth, but... he arrived a little early, so I'm going with that as the reason. hee-hee.

I forgot to take a picture of the back. It had a really vibrant blue print with modern little cars that looked abstract from far away. I'm really happy with how it turned out. It was definitively made with lots of love! This was one of those projects that whatever could go wrong did. My walking foot broke, and on & on. In the end, I do think the binding turned out perfect though. Hand sewn binding just makes a quilt for me. I also love the texture after I washed it and it got all nice & wrinkly through the quilting. Have a happy life in your new happy home.

New Beginnings

Last weekend, I was lucky enough to witness the birth of a new little soul. My best friend had her first son, and I got to be there. I even cut the cord-seriously. It was so amazing. I've had four of my own babies, and saw three more come into this world, but this was my first cord cutting.

As the cord was cut, this sweet boy was officially his own person. Separated from his mama's body, he now has to breathe, and eat for himself. The world is a new place with many sensations, noises and newness. I couldn't help but feel a sense of rightness enfolding. You see, I've wished for Mary after the birth of EVERY single one of my babies. We had a falling out & lost touch during college. It was always one of those wrongs that I've always wanted righted.

When I moved to Columbus I was an 18 year old kid, with no life experience other than being at home with my parents. [like most college freshman]. I was in a new city and pretty much on my own. I met Mary the first day, she was my new roommate from Texas. From the very beginning she looked out for me, making sure I woke up on time [i'm so not a morning person & NEVER was]. She made breakfast, went to parks with me, the library. Pretty much we did everything together. These things are all fine & great- many of you have friends like that. It was how she did it. She was so nurturing & kind, wanting nothing in return. I was so angry & hostile at the time [although I didn't realize it then]. Angry at the world! I had built up this tough persona because I was so wounded, and actually afraid to admit it.

I started calling her Mama Mary after only a few weeks, I think. Without even realizing it, she opened my eyes to who I "could" be and the happiness I could have if I just stopped being so damn angry. Still it took years to pass until I realized it. When we had a argument, I responded in the only way I knew at the time-anger to mask my hurt & fear. She moved out, I grumbled.

A few years later, Dylan was born and all I wished for was to have Mary at my side to meet my son. While I hadn't seen her in several years, she still felt like a mother to me-to the NEW me. The improved me. The me I wanted her to know now existed. More children joined our family.. rather quickly and I still felt a sadness that wouldn't pass. I wanted to thank Mary for the mother I was. The mother I had become, the mother I wanted to be. It was all because of her & the small kindness she bestowed on me for a small year and a half, back in the day. The year and a half that changed me! Gave me the self esteem to realize what I could be- and someday would be.

When I randomly ran into her last year, I was overjoyed, but so cautious. Would we still be friends? Had I built it up to be so great, reality would fail me? Would she even want to speak to me after I spoke to her so unkindly. Then one year later -almost to the date- and I am cutting the cord to her baby. Cutting away the old- the pain & regret, the doomed "argument" A new future ahead. It no longer mattered that she wasn't with me when my babies arrived because she is with them now--all the time. I could be with her for her birth, and I hope I helped her just a little for those few hours, like she helped me all those years ago. Some way to even try and payback some of her kindness.

Thank you for letting me be present at the baby's birth. [she's now Mama Mary to three of her own little one's] It meant more to me than you'll ever know!

With the recent start of school, crafting time has slowed a little for now. [It's only temporary!!] With Dylan and Mia both in school and Julian napping several hours each afternoon, I'm finding myself alone.. with ONE kid for several hours a day. That hasn't happened in YEARS. I'm hoping to be able to get some "extra" work done in that block while he paints, or sews along next to me a couple times a week. Just the "idea" of being able to have a few more hours a week with the option of sewing or painting has me giggling with glee.

I made this pillow and chair cushion a few days before school started. I was in my glory-all super stressed about school starting, so cranking out sewing projects left & right. [I go crazy knitting & sewing when I'm anxious or stressed] I actually still need to finish the 2nd seat cushion, but one is better than none. I've had this Amy Butler fabric in my closet for a few years waiting to make it into a handbag, I thought it was time to actually use it.

We picked up these two chairs recently on a thrifting hunt. They were originally destined to be painted immediately. Once I got them home and cleaned them up, I realized they matched our dining table wood color-perfectly. Now I'm not so sure if I'll paint them or let them be. I had imagined a nice crisp white, or bold blue. For now, we are enjoying them in their natural wooden state.

The pillow was made with the leftover scraps from my living room curtains. I'm so into yellow right now. I find it particularly peculiar because I NEVER liked yellow-ever, even as a kid. About 2 years ago, all the sudden yellow was like the long long friend I hadn't even realized I was missing.

A little Summer left

While the older two are off at school, and Baby Julian napping, Lucian and myself are soaking up every last bit of "summer" left. The days are still filled with sunny skies, but the mornings now have a touch of brisk, Autumn air. Tree's are still green, but just a few brown leaves have been making their way to our porch & yard. The squirrels have started hiding acorns in all my potted plants. Fall will be here before we know it.

Yesterday, Lucian found three of these little caterpillars. He decided they were a family and went to work reuniting them. A happy Mama, Daddy and baby were relocated together, under a large tree. "Now don't run away and go lost again", he gently tells them.

We made it

We made it through the first, and second days of school. I should say I made it. The kids are beyond thrilled- with their teachers, friends, studies. I'm getting used to a much quieter house with just the two little one's at home. It was so strange today to have the house absolutely quiet for about an hour while the baby was napping, and Lucian, resting in bed [aka- pretending to be a robot in his room, and making a mess. A quiet mess though and this mama couldn't ask for anything more!] I love him in the lat picture. His face says it all "NOOOOooooooo, don't go guys!!"

Tomorrow marks the end of the first week. So far, it's gone by so much smoother, less stressful and anxiety filled than last year. While I do really miss the kids all day, everyone seems happy, and that makes me happiest of all!

School starts

Today marks the end of many things, [at least for the school year].
It's the end of an almost eight year run spending EVERY day of Dylan's life with him. It's been bittersweet for me to send him off to school. The end of entire days spent in the yard. The end of our summer days, the unity of all the kids together in one place. The end of "official" homeschooling, {for now}. The end of staying up late for impromptu movie nights with the kids. The end of the "chance" of sleeping in {not that it happened all summer. sigh}

With the end of some things brings the beginning of many others.
The new daily rhythm of schools. A focused year on Lucian, helping him to build up his self esteem and work on his speech/language. Lots of time to spend with just the little boys. Preparing for fall {my favorite season of all}, then the darkness of winter, with blankets, snuggles, hats & mittens.

Today will be filled with lots of hugs... and a few tears from mama. A few endings and a few fresh starts.

Pillow for grandma. I can finally start showing off a few recent gifts I've made. I've had to wait until they were actually gifted to not ruin the surprise.

These are easy and really fun to make! All you have to do is trace your children's hands, {think grade school, thanksgiving turkey style} Depending on the number of children you have , design a layout that looks nice. Ant text would work: We Love Dad, Growing like a weed, 2011... whatever you like. After deciding, I traced the hand prints, and wrote the text to a piece of fabric, cut to the size needed for the pillow. Get to embroidering. That's the fun part! Choose all one color, rainbow, cool colors, warm colors.

Once finished stitch up the pillow, stuff or add pillow form and your done! These would also looked nice with the picture frame project I wrote about a few weeks ago here.

Eating: This week, we are eating lots of tasty salsa, pretty much straight from our garden. This goes great with chips or homemade bread. yum! We've been able to do 90% of our weekly shopping at the Farmers Market & our backyard. I feel pretty great about that. Local tasty goodness!

Making: lots! Baby Quilts for friends, pillows, coffee sleeves, seat cushions, book slings, baby pants. Plus the 101 creative projects that the kids have going on each & everyday.

Enjoying: We are enjoying playing with that little kitten up there. He seems to be incapable of holding still for more than 30 seconds. He's also driving out two older cats nuts, so the children try to entertain him, for their sake.
We are also relaxing! Oh how I love just hanging out! School starts in a few daysand the next few weeks will be anything, but relaxing. I'm carry so much anxiety around with me before school starts. This will be the first year Dylan will be going off to school. We've always homeschooled with him, so it's a big change for me [& him]. He's my first baby. He's the child that made me a mom, not just Jessica. I'm happy & sad all at the same time about sending him off to school. Rest, yes... I do need some rest.

Coffee Sleeves

I made this fun coffee sleeve for my Dad. He's a HUGE old school, monster, movie buff. The [hard to find] print has all the classics, the Werewolf, Dracula, Creature, Frankenstein. I searched for months to find this fabric for him. [last year I made him a pillow in this print too]. These are really fun to make and useful! Wrap one around your coffee cup or disposable cup and save some tree's without using a paper sleeve.

Other big news for us.. We will be at Craftin Outlaws 2011! woo-hoo. This will be Kunklebaby's 5th year at the show. It's one of my favorite of the year, with an awesome fun crowd, and so many talented vendors. If your local, or wanna travel that weekend, come down & see us! New slipper socks. I made these for my kid sister's birthday. [well, she's all of 26 years old this year, but she'll always be my kid sis], I used the pattern for the Broken Rib Socks from the book, 101 Designer one-skein wonders.

I really like how they turned out- color and texture. The pattern was pretty easy to follow, which was important to me because they are the FIRST pair if adult socks I've ever finished. yay! I totally want to make a pair for myself now.

To keep fabric from unraveling and making a crazy, string web in your washer {and losing less of the fabric, esp. on short cuts} serge the cut ends before washing. Only takes a few extra minutes, but the result is oh so nice. ~~I think I love my serger more than my husband today.~~

Summer is quickly speeding away. Only 15 days left until the start of school. I feel anxiety tighten in my throat and each breathe harder to take than the last as I type that! Last year was so difficult for us, and this summer was such a welcome retreat, break, blessing! I never wanted it to end.

As the days, weeks, then months passed on the calender, I tried to ignore the feeling of sudden doom. {I tend to be a little over dramatic... can you tell? } If I spent my time worrying about when it would end, I would never enjoy any of it.

So that just what I did. I turned a blind eye to the end of June. I cautiously noted the middle of July being awfully close to August {without freaking out}. Now, all the sudden, yes the anxiety & stress has all surfaced. The city schools site had a ticking countdown on their website. I was looking for some info and as I saw it the blood drained from my face. no.. so soon.... where did the summer go? Back to the hustle & bustle of school, packed lunches, germs, OMG the germs & sickness, lost jackets, shoes, books. Most of all, being separated from my children. That's the part that really gets me. I feel like part of my soul is cut away when they are gone. It's not a welcoming feeling!

We will be salvaging every last minute to enjoy each others company and the beautiful end of summer days we have left. I'll even "try" to stay calm.

Have you seen Pottery Barn's new Eric Carle line? My kids want all of it, and well... it's just not in the budget right now. I've had this Hungry Caterpillar fabric for a few years. My favorite dress Mia ever owned was made with it. I had told the kids I would stretch some of the fabric I had leftover on stretcher strips and hang them for awhile {till they get bored, or their mama does}. I told them with a promise that I would do it as soon as I picked up some stretcher strips at the store.

In a family of six, with pets, well... things break. often. I have a pile of frames that somehow or other, the glass broke. For about two years now, my husband " was going to buy new glass at the hardware store this weekend". I was looking at them today and decided that's never going to happen! I could make them some new "artwork" without investing a dime.

To create these you need:

old frame
fabric slightly larger than frame size
(optional) spray paint to change frame color

The first thing to do is decide on the fabric. This is the most fun step. This project would be great for expensive Japanese imports because it uses so little, fat quarters, and anything you might have lying around.
Remove the cardboard backer from the frame and cut the fabric about an inch larger than this piece.

Now carefully tape, or staple the fabric around the backer board. You want to do alternating sides, not one's next to each other. So top first, then bottom, etc with sides. I used tape because it was next to me and I didn't want to go searching for the staple gun {and find out we were outta staples. lol} You want to hold fabric firmly, but don't pull too hard or it will pucker on front.

Make sure the corners are nice & tidy or it will not fit back in the frame. Add the frame.... and YOUR DONE! See wasn't that easy! Hang up and vacuum every so often if you feel inclined.

Have you ever read this book? I cry... EVERY TIME. Yes, every single one. I tear up just thinking about the end. It's a must read for every mama out there.

Here's a short list of someday's:

Someday, I want to finish school ... so I can be a "real" artist. lol
Someday, I want to have one more baby
Someday, I want to take my family on a nice, long vacation-outta Ohio
Someday, I want to have a [slightly] larger house
Someday, I want to hold my grandchildren for the first time, and remember what it was like to hold their parents

New baby hat & socks. No, they are not for us. My best friend is having her third baby this Fall. I think this may be the most excited I've ever been about a baby that wasn't growing in my very own belly! Let's just say this baby will be well outfitted with handmade goodies.

I've been nervous to knit socks since I first learned how to knit. So many directions it seemed and I was just overwhelmed. I finally decided today was the day and started. These are from a pattern in More Last Minute Knitted Gifts. I love that book. As a beginning knitter, I've found the directions so easy to understand and the projects just lovely!

These have already been gifted, because well, I am the worst secret keeper in the whole world. There was no way I could wait till the baby arrived to share them. I'll post some more baby gifts here as I give them away early, because lets face it, I already know I can't wait.

And this- is why I love her so much. Because she loves my children so much, with such an open heart and arms!

While I've been away, one sweet little baby turned one. That same little baby seems to have turned into a boy. He's walking, talking and even trying to jump! He has the sweetest soul of anyone I've ever met. He's easy going, hilarious and helpful. I couldn't ask for a better baby, ...ehh boy. Sorry that is taking some getting used to for this mama. My fourth child, my third son, my love. I'm so glad you are a part of this family. I couldn't imagine a day without you now!

After a few months break, I'm sure some of you wondered what in the world happened to us! As the end of school loomed and my to-do list exploded at the seams I started to feel a huge pressure bearing down on me. I was just getting kinda overwhelmed with... well, life it seems. I needed a break from the crazy stressful days. I have never, ever in all my life looked forward to a summer as much as this one! Summer was going to be a welcome time for me to relax, stop shuffling the kids here & there & here again, read a little, just... be!

I stopped blogging here because I was just too busy for a few weeks. I started to feel anxious about not blogging, like I was neglecting my job or something. It was then I realized I needed a break. No deadline, so craft shows, no to do list! Just fresh summer air and a free schedule. So after that's exactly what we dis the past few months. Instead of blogging & searching the internet, I exercised each night {and lost 15 lbs so far]. Instead of planning my summer show line up, I knit and read books-for fun, like I used to when I had "time". Instead of school & the morning shuffle we relax in the backyard with some sun & fresh veggies.

I am feeling more relaxed and more like myself than I have in a long time. The winter of 2011 was rough on us [me] and I just needed some time I think. I'm happy to be back and feeling energized and creative. So, while I was gone, we....

Danced. Oh, how we've danced!

Made new friends. That's Little L's new buddy, Blue. Yes, I know he's an orange cat, but blue is his favorite color and word. I'm just happy he's not called Batman. lol

Played in the dirt.

Laughed and loved. I've never laughed so much in my life. I'M BACK!

I've been puked on, peed on & spent sleepless nights cradling my child, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Sometimes I just stare at them and wonder how I EVER got so lucky to be their mother. How lucky I am to have these amazing, sweet little people in my life. They make me smile, and sometimes cry. They make me feel strong and important, beautiful and smart. They make me happy, and warm. I am thankful for their giggles, smiles and hugs. Thankful they come to me and ask for help. I hope it never changes.

Happy Easter! I've never welcomed spring like this year. It's been a long, tough winter for us here and any hint at warmer weather...and a healthier family, is welcomed with open arms. The kids were up, had found all the baskets and eggs by 6:47! Yes, prior to 7am [gulp]. I am so not a morning person, but it was a wonderful happy [albeit early] morning for all!

new shirts

I finally got a serger!! Ohhh serger, how I love you.I have no idea how I ever sewed without one before this! Let's just say while I love you sewing machine, it will never be exclusive again. The first thing I made was a few new shirts for the boys. I love how they turned out. They are all from the same pattern, but each unique in it's own way.

I'm loving the babies little Easter shirt. I had the most trouble with that one. I hate when nothing actually went wrong, things just aren't working out. Seams needed pulled. It started with a regular collar. I tore that out after it went wrong and added the hood. It's far from perfect, but I love it just the same.

The other two shirts were sewn in moments it seemed. Not really, but after all the trouble with Bink's shirt, the older boys together took less time. They have been wearing them not stop, which makes for a happy mama. I have four girls shirts on the to do list now. One for Miss {M} and a few Easter gifts... which hopefully get made prior to Easter. haha.

Little L is turning three this weekend. Three! I can't believe three years has passed already since they placed him in my arms. He was such a sweet, mellow baby. He slept most of the time as an infant. We all laugh that he was just saving up his energy. He woke up one day and flipped the switch. He's the most energetic, physical little boy!

He's so imaginative, silly and sweet. There is such a sweet heart behind all the energy. He has this little mischievous twinkle in his eyes that never leaves. On a good day, I love, love, love it. On a bad day, it's almost enough to drive this mama insane. The good outweigh the rough days though.

At three, you love batman, running, jumping, dancing and anything dangerous. You linger before getting in the car each & every morning to take your sister to school. That linger is just long enough to let you get covered in mud, fall in a puddle, or find something "interesting" to get into. You love tea and chocolate milk-not at the same time. You still twirl your hair while drinking your milk. I wonder if that habit will follow you through life as a relaxing, coping mechanism. You alternate between a batman, superman and a cowboy shirt several times each day, sometimes by the hour.

I love you more that the stars, my sweet, sweet boy! Happy Birthday.

tea for three

A nice quiet morning with tea. A little love in a cup. I received an awesome flowering tea set and new heart shaped tea cups for my birthday last month. They have gotten so much use for only being here a few short weeks. I'm LOVING these cups-the heart shaped liquid makes me smile every time!

I love including the boys in our tea parties. A little time to relax and reflect on the rhythm of our day. We sit and talk and enjoy our drinks, sometimes just water for the littler kids. I think it's really important to include the boys. Boys enjoy tea just as much as my daughter, just as much as running and wrestling. I think the time is extra special with Little {L}, who tends to lean towards more physical activities 98% of the time. I hate gender stereotypes and try really hard to raise the kids equally. Equal choice, opportunity and education! So grab some flavored tea, a few cups and spend some time with those sons!

Turn and face the strain, chhhh-changes. I hear the David Bowie song in my head as I type. So many changes happening here. Little Miss M is growing up, it seems overnight! Another lost tooth for her last week. I don't know what it is about lost teeth, but it just seems so... grown up to me. I'm starting to miss my sweet, cherub faced little girl. The sounds of her feet, running through the house with her spiky pigtails dancing around as as she chased one of the cats to "hug". Those extra, extra long snuggles she perfected. Her little tidbits of childhood wisdom she would interject at- just. the. perfect. moments. As a toddler her eyes carried wisdom far superior to her numerical age. My old soul, my princess.

Her hugs have gotten a little shorter, her patience for mama a little less. More interest is swaying to her friends and school. Mama seems to no longer have all the answers [and some days none]. On one hand I feel deep sadness, like the loss of my friend. On the other, I try to understand it's the changes that need to take place as she grows into a strong, confident woman. I just hope she still needs her mama while she travels the journey- just a little.

The flower bud has to grow to bloom, but it still needs water & sunshine along the way.

So much happens in a day here. Often though, it feels like nothing at all is ever getting accomplished. Never ending piles of laundry, a floor that always could use a mopping, piles of unsewn projects. The stacks getting taller than the children.

I looked around today just to see how much is happening. Truly happening here. Little hands explore, grow, hug. Reading, oh so much reading for our four young one's. Snuggle time, as my well fed, round baby giggles at crackers and falls asleep in the crook of my arm, milk dripping from the side of his mouth. Brains expand and grow. I grow-one day older, one day wiser.

So much being done. So much being done that isn't measured in currency, time, inches or centimeters. Things are being measured with love and memories here. Perfection? no. Happiness together? you bet. Sometimes you need to focus on the little things.

ten months

Little hands grow strong before my eyes. Grasping, exploring, signing for more, milk and eat. New mysteries unfold each day, hour... minute. So much to explore and learn. I'm a proud, gushing mama, but sometimes inside I'm screaming. STAY! STOP! Don't grow, don't change so fast. Do not grow another inch.

My sweet baby number four, so quickly changing into a toddler. As the baby days are drawing to a close, I want to hold onto every second. Remember every expression, sound, the smell of your little baby head after a nap-everything. I fear soon I'll be looking at a grown man, wondering how he was just my baby... yesterday.

It's been awhile since I did a flashback Friday, so one is overdue. I came across these pictures the other day. Little {L} is about a month or two older than Baby {J} is right now. SO SO SO very different boys! While Mr. Binks is just working on standing alone right now, Little {L} was running through the house, chaos and messes following him wherever he ran.

I love that his shirt says "I do my own stunts". You can't plan stuff like that. The kid is fearless... since birth!

Today I turn thirty! Yes, thirty. I remember a time when I thought I would never be that "old". It seems to have crept up on me overnight. I'm pretty sure I was just turning 25 yesterday. I'm not going to lie, the idea of now being in my thirties rather than late twenties has been haunting me over the past few weeks. I may, or may not have had a few mini-meltdowns about it all.

I am looking forward to all that the next ten years will bring though. I couldn't be a happier mama! I have four beautiful kids and a wonderful husband. Over the next few years I hope to expand Kunklebaby a bit to include my artwork, which means I need to "find" some time to paint again, possibly have one more baby [please honey...just one more. lol], watch my children grow and blossom into their own unique little people, spend more time with my husband just the two of us, get more sleep [just a little, please Binks], find time to workout everyday, learn how to knit better, laugh, smile and be happy.

Whatever my thirties hold for me, Bring it On!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE hats for new little babies!! There is just something so sweet about bundling up a new little miracle in something special & handmade if possible. I made this little hat for our good friends who just welcomed their first baby to the family.

Spring is Here!

What better way to celebrate the arrival of Spring than a Spring Equinox Tea Party? We had so much fun over the weekend celebrating the sunny [and hopefully healthy] season ahead.

Fruit, cookies, tea, cakes and friends= the perfect combo! I spent the week leading up to the stitching the embroidered tea coasters. I think they were the perfect touch for the day, even the boys liked theirs.

I think we may have to add this to our annual events list.

9 months

You've been here 9 whole months already Binks!! [well close to 10m now, but with all the sickness cycling through the house, this is as quick as I could get these up] Everyday you grow more & more amazing. Your have beautiful grey eyes that have flecks of blue, green and brown depending on the day. I can't get enough of your little giggles, and now kisses. Yes, you are kissing us back and it's awesome! You pull yourself up on the furniture now and can get into lots of new trouble that way-like the toilet.

Nursing is still one of your favorite activities, day & night. You have four teeth now, two up and two down so we are working that out. I do love how you entwine your toes together while your eating. It's so sweet. You like some foods and have started feeding yourself finger goods [so grown up!]. You say cat, mama, dada, and squeal in delight when we clap for your talking accomplishments.

There is magic in your smile and a mischievous , adventurous twinkle in your eye. Your easy going attitude definitely helps mama out at times, although you have three siblings that couldn't adore you more.

Hats

I've been meaning to show off these hats I made last month. It's getting closer & closer to Spring now, but they sure have gotten their use so far and will be perfect for next year also. It's March in Ohio though, I'm sure they will get at least a couple more days of use!

I used the pattern from More Last Minute Knitted Gifts. It was a super easy & crazy fast to knit up. I'm already planning to make some for Christmas gifts next year. Best of all the kids really like them.

Lucky

After all the stuff we have gone through this past month. I feel lucky. Lucky to have such a wonderful family and the chance to know all these great people that I call my children. Several of our children have febrile seizures. It's been a rocky path to follow the past seven years, but so worth it. So many people have asked us over the years, why we had more children after we found out the older kids had the febrile seizures. It's really such a silly question to me. I look at their faces and think how could I not want to meet them, know them, call them my own.

My husband had the same thing when he was a kid. It's genetic and children typically outgrow them around 5-6. My husband did, and I Love knowing him, being married to him, and raising our great FOUR kids together! I can't imagine what my life would be like if his mother had said, well my kids "might" have this, so I just wont a child.

While it hasn't been easy, or always fun, who's life with children ever is. The seizures have actually helped me to appreciate the good times, focus on how lucky we are for all that we do have. It's how we act in the time of hardship that shows us our strengths, not times of joy. Yeah, I could feel all gloom and doom and think "why me", but that doesn't do anyone any good. It accomplishes nothing but growing anger that eats away at people's souls.

If I had the choice to pick whether or not the kids had these, I surely would pick no. Who wouldn't? One of the children hasn't ever had one [so far] and I am grateful for everyday without them in his life! They are such amazing, caring, fun kids that I can't image ever thinking it was reason enough not to know them.

Thank you universe, for allowing these great little people to call me mom! [I know you don't really hate me, proof positive 4x over. ]
